About Riversdale Beach
The Wairarapa’s premium beach resort. Sometimes overlooked for Castlepoint, visitors are pleasantly surprised as they drive into picturesque Riversdale.
Located 56km (34 miles) east of Masterton, it is an easy 2 hour journey from Wellington and Palmerston North travelling on one of the Wairarapa’s most picturesque country scenic drives on a sealed road.
Riversdale offers a pleasant holiday climate with the prevailing north westerly wind of the Wairarapa having little effect at Riversdale unlike many other coastal holiday destinations in the Wairarapa.
Riversdale Beach offers the timeless pleasures of sun, sand and sea with the long white sandy beach. Have peace of mind swimming in the patrolled swimming area or sit back and enjoy watching the surfcasters.
Many hectares of rocks are exposed during low tide at both ends of the two mile bay creating a family playground for fishing, snorkelling and crayfishing.
The North end of the bay has the larger rocky outcrops creating sheltered inlets and rock pools, which are ideal for launching small boats to fish the many reefs.
Many species of fish are to be caught including Moki, Butterfish, Kawai, Blue & Red Cod.
Riversdale Beach has an abundance of leisure activities in close proximity. Water skiing, canoeing and flounder fishing are the main activities at the Whareama River only 14 kilometres from the beach. This river is tidal for several miles and is often very sheltered and a great picnic spot, with herring and mullet fishing off the jetty.
The resort brags to have one of the best nine hole golf links in the country, with views of the pacific ocean from many areas of the golf course. The modern licensed club house – the watering hole for familiar faces also overlooks the tennis courts.
A surf club with strong membership is active over most of the summer seasons and lifeguards offer 'nipper' training classes to the young future lifeguards over the Christmas holidays climaxing with a mini surf carnival on Wellington Anniversary weekend.
The resort also boasts a shop/cafe which has all the necessary amenities needed while on holiday. It is a licensed and well stocked shop, providing takeaways, all day breakfast, great cappuccino’s and postal service available.

Vibrant Coastal Community
Home to a vibrant mix of residential homes, holiday homes. holiday rentals, and baches.
Riversdale Beach is one of New Zealands hidden gems. It is located on the sparsely populated southeast coast of the North Island, 56 kilometres east of Masterton.
It is one of the longest beaches in the Wairarapa and is widely recognised within the surfing community for its year-round surf.
The area was developed in the 1950's by a champion Wairarapa swimmer, who knew that this part of the Wairarapa coast had consistently good surf and was sheltered by the natural barrier of the Tararua Ranges.
Pristine Waters for Surfing, Swimming, Snorkelling & Fishing
The gently sloping beach at Riversdale is four kilometers long. It's a great place for surfing and swimming. Visitors are welcome to play a game at the golf course, which has excellent views of the ocean from nearly every tee.
At low tide, a large area of rock is exposed at both ends of the bay, creating a natural playground for fishing and snorkeling. An exposed reef two kilometers out to sea is a well known diving site and a good place to catch groper.
Uriti Point, with its cobblestones of eroded sandstone, and the fossilized forest at the Kaiwhata river mouth are only a short drive away from Riversdale.
Riversdale Beach 9 Hole Golf Course
A unique nine hole links on the Wairarapa Coast.This is a fabulous, short but testing, links style course. We also have two tennis courts. We welcome all visitors and new members.
The course is open all year and bookings are not necessary except for the period between 26 December to 25 January.
Membership at Riversdale Beach Golf Club gives you access to an assortment of tournaments including the Club Championship, social events at the club and our monthly newsletter to keep you up to date with what’s happening at Riversdale Beach Golf Club.
Riversdale Beach Surf Club
A great little family oriented club, popular with locals, visitors, and holiday makers alike.
The club patrols the beach from Labour Weekend through to Waitangi Weekend and every day from Boxing day through to Wellington Anniversary Weekend. A full nipper programme is run for under 7's to under 14's every week day through January.
The nipper carnival on the Sunday of Anniversary weekend is always a festive occasion with a wave testing most competitors.
